Latin America is poised to embark on a significant new wave of infrastructure investment, with an annual requirement of approximately USD 250 billion through 2028 to bridge its existing infrastructure gap. Unlike previous cycles, this wave is distinctly influenced by sustainability imperatives. Notably, the region already generates nearly 60% of its electricity from renewable sources, with countries such as Chile, Colombia, and Brazil scaling up their solar, wind, and green hydrogen initiatives.
The financing gap, however, remains substantial. To achieve sustainable development and climate objectives, the region must allocate up to 19% of GDP by 2030, while current climate finance flows constitute merely 0.5% of GDP. This scenario presents a compelling opportunity for investors. Infrastructure has long been recognized as a resilient asset class, offering stable, long-term cash flows and often outperforming traditional asset categories in emerging markets due to robust demand and inflation-linked revenue models.
Recent studies corroborate that sustainable infrastructure projects in Latin America deliver competitive, risk-adjusted returns while contributing measurable climate and social impacts. This alignment with the growing interest in impact investing amongst Swiss and European institutional investors further enhances the attractiveness of the region. Consequently, Latin America not only offers substantial growth potential but also the opportunity to direct capital toward projects that bolster climate resilience, facilitate energy transitions, and promote inclusive development, thereby yielding both financial returns and positive societal outcomes.
